Brighton Runyanga
A True Story Arthrob!
The Shona Artist Fund and Spirits In Stone's art collectors take one giant step toward surgically repairing a young Shona boy's heart in South Africa.
After 9 long months of wrangling with the politics of Zimbabwe, doctors, hospitals, committees....Anthony Ponter, with the generous efforts of Katherine & Karl Poehlman, Mark & Bonnie Barnes, and Spirits In Stone, over $3000 was raised to contribute to the travel and medical expenses for a little Shona boy, named Brighton Runyanga.
Brighton Runyanga & father Kingston | We were alerted to the critical nature of this boy's heart, when his father, Shona sculptor Kingston Runyanga, wrote a letter to curator, Anthony Ponter, pleading for help for his son's life. As medical services have all but collasped in Zimbabwe, Kingston's son, was in peril. At any moment the hole in his heart could expand or tear and end his life. And like any good father, he had to take action immediately. Time is of the essence!
Anthony, determined to not have this happen, began emailing hospitals in the USA and South Africa to assist. He spoke with doctors, anesthesiologists, nurses, hospital administrators, airlines, Shona collectors and then, on January 17th, he received an email from Lynda Bleazard, Marketing Manager, Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa, South Africa.
She stated, "I presented his case to the committee this morning and although he is not an easily correctible case, they have elected to put him onto the programme.
He will have a cardiac cath first and then a decision will be made for surgery. Please can you make arrangements with Air Zimbabwe to have him sent down to us in February. I can accommodate two adults accompanying him."
We are overjoyed that hope reigns supreme! Into action we GO! At long last a concrete action path has opened up and we are all in overdrive. The race is on to repair a faulty heart. Yes, it is THE perfect Valentine's Gift! A beautiful heart to be mended...

FEB 26: Visual Poetry - Recent Paintings by Wosene Kosrof
"In my works, language goes far beyond the literal meaning. As I break
apart the Amharic symbols and reshape them as colors on canvas, it's almost like I'm putting them under a microscope, to discover what stories they tell, what secrets they have. They come alive at the tip of my brush, and we speak to each other in their language of elegant and rhythmic lines, circles, and curves." Wosene 2004
Spirits in Stone is honored to present recent works by Wosene Worke Kosrof from the series Visual Poetry during a champagne reception with the artist. View Wosene's latest work.
