Featured Artist - Sylvester Mubayi Sylvester Mubayi was born in 1942, in the Chihota District of Zimbabwe. In 1966 he moved to Harare, where, during a visit to the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, a chance encounter with Tom Blomfield changed his life forever. He was invited to join the Sculptors Community at Tengenenge under Blomfield, and before long became one of the most accomplished sculptors there. Later, he became a founding member of the Vukutu Workshop School established by Frank McEwen who, in 1987, called Mubayi "by far the greatest sculptor there." In 1989, Mubayi was named one of the three greatest living stone sculptors in the world by art critic Michael Shepherd of the London Daily Telegraph. His work is inspired by a world of spirit and supernatural forces, often fusing people and the animal world. Mubayi's work has appeared in group exhibitions since 1969 in London, Paris, Johannesburg, Durban, Berlin, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Sydney, Rome, Dublin, Los Angeles, and Chicago. His sculptures appear annually at the Nedlaw Exhibition at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, and were shown in a solo exhibition in 1988 at Francis Kyle Gallery in London. Thank You to Collector Investors Recognizing the need to accelerate the purchasing of artworks from the Shona sculptors, collectors invested in the last 2 containers to be brought out of Zimbabwe. Their purpose was to ensure a continuity of artistic future for the sculptors. After over 2 decades of reliability, we have taken the stance of aggressive art purchasing during these turbulent times to keep the artists financially fueled and their livelihoods viable. Also, SIS expanded into 2 more galleries, Healdsburg and the Claremont Resort & Spa in Berkeley. Demand for Shona sculpture has also greatly increased. Great news for the artists! Investor collectors received a short term high yield return on their funds described as both innovative and highly rewarding, both for artists and for investors. This was a morally inspired investment by our collectors and a sound business decision. The first container has arrived and the second is on the ship out of Durban, South Africa. A big well done and thanks to all for their commitment and solidarity to the artists. This is a sustainable and ethical relationship with Africa for which we can all be proud. By the way, the first New Year container for 2004 is being bought and packed right now! Thank you all for your love of the art, the artists and being the stand for Africa. |
