Wosene Worke Kosrof in Healdsburg

Special Artist Appearance on June 9th, from 4 to 7pm

Wosene Kosrof Painting, Storyville
Storyville by Wosene
Featured in the current Smithsonian exhibition at the National Museum of African Art, entitled Inscribing Meaning, Wosene Worke Kosrof is a major contemporary African artist and the first Ethiopian-born painter to incorporate the Amharic language symbols as a core element in his paintings. With his use of a wide-ranging palette, Wosene recognized by art critics and art historians as a master colorist brings the distorted, elongated, and disassembled language characters to life in compositions that engage the rhythms and improvisations of jazz.

For the new works in the Healdsburg Spirits in Stone exhibition, Wosene - inspired by the sounds of Coltrane, Monk, and Billie Holiday, among others - focused on translating the sounds of jazz into color and form. The lead painting for this exhibition Storyville recalls the early, and very fertile, jazz scene in the Storyville district of New Orleans that gave rise in the first decades of the 20th century to many great musicians and vocalists. Wosene has chosen a selection of musical classics for the evening, including cuts from Billie Holiday at Storyville (the Storyville Club in Boston, MA) for this exhibit - which opens Saturday, June 9th, from 4-7 pm.
