Gala Benefit for Mandaza's Zimbabwe Community

Mandaza was raised as a Christian and trained as an educator, school administrator, and police officer in Zimbabwe before being called by the spirits of his ancestors to become a nganga, or traditional healer. He moves easily between the worlds of Christianity and the earth ways, secular and sacred, traditional and modern. As a vessel of the spirits, he receives visions and dreams, makes offerings, performs healing rituals, and serves as messenger for the Ancient Ones. Mandaza teaches us to become "living prayers" “ to be in service of the One Spirit that exists in all things. He has lectured and provided healing counsel throughout Southern Africa, the United States, Canada, and India. With Michael Ortiz Hill, Mandaza co-authored Twin from Another Tribe, a book offering a rare delineation of Shona cosmology and traditional practices. In the SPIRIT of giving Mandaza supports a large community in Zimbabwe, including many children. His country is currently plagued by serious disruption, drought, unemployment, and shortages of food, water, gasoline, and essential medicines. Life expectancy has dropped from 61 to 36 years of age.

Spirits in Stone: Museum Exhibit

The San Diego Natural History Museum announces the return of Spirits in Stone, an exhibition featuring sculpture of internationally acclaimed Zimbabwean Shona stone sculptors, as well as masks and baskets.

Masks, Magic & Meaning - 1st Thursday Art Walk

The sacred, the ritual, the Spiritual: this is the poetic language of the mask. It is a language of complex mythological stories, rich traditions and historic legends. These traditions were not written but remembered and acted, each time differently. The stories, mask designs, costumes and dances pass through the generations as cultural treasures.
