Pasadena, CA, June 14, 2005 - Community outreach programs in the San
Gabriel valley will benefit from a fundraising exhibition July 21-24 in
conjunction with Spirits In Stone, the much-acclaimed gallery that
specializes in African Shona sculpture from Zimbabwe. The Exhibit will
open on Thursday, 7/21 from 5-8pm, with the exhibit continuing on Friday
 | | Artist Eddie Masaya | and Saturday, 7/22 & 23 from noon to 8pm, and on Sunday, 7/24 from
10:30am to 4 pm. Eddie Masaya, a visiting artist from Zimbabwe will be
sculpting at the event. Masaya's work has been exhibited world wide.
He has received awards of merit and highly commended works from the
National Gallery of Zimbabwe, and displays at the National Gallery at
annual exhibitions.
The exhibition will include the display of an entirely new collection of
recently uncrated Shona sculpture and other artworks such as masks,
baskets, and fine jewelry from around the world. Curators Anthony and
Laura Ponter will offer fascinating lecture tours during the exhibit to
inspire the audience with the history, lore and legends of Shona
culture.
On Sunday, from 11 am to 3 pm, live Zimbabwean music will be performed
by both the Masanga Marimba Ensemble (www.masanga.com), and the Chigamba Family with the ten-piece Chinyakare
Ensemble ( www.chinyakare.com).
Spirits In Stone began when owners Anthony and Laura Ponter linked up
with museums and nonprofits and started conducting exhibitions to
promote Shona art in 1979. Buoyed by the $15 million they raised for
charity and the consistently laudatory response they received at each
show over the years, the Ponters continue to conduct fundraising
exhibits for nonprofit groups. The Ponters have dedicated their lives
to promoting Shona art, helping to support some 800 artists in Zimbabwe
over the last 25 years.
The Neighborhood Church Chapel Gallery is located at 301 N. Orange Grove
Blvd. in Pasadena, next to Gamble House, with easy access from the
